Lady Gaga’s Gold Wheelchair: All the Details

Pop star recovering from surgery on 24-karat throne

By Lauren Musacchio  |  March 13, 2013   |  rollingstone

Trust Lady Gaga to turn injury into spectacle. After canceling the rest of her Born This Way Ball Tour and going into surgery for an inflammatory joint infection called synovitis, she is currently confined to a wheelchair – but, per usual, the chair is an elaborate one covered in 24-karat gold.

According to the Daily Beast, the chair was commissioned by Gaga’s stylist to jewelry designer Ken Borochov. Borochov, of the label Mordekai, completed the throne with only a week’s notice and worked with manufacturers across the country on each costly component. “It was a huge undertaking,” Borochov said. “It was made all over the United States. My assistant had to run around everywhere.”

Victoria’s Secret “consent” web site too good to be true

12 Feb

When I was sent a link to the fake site I fell for it and thought it was the best things since sliced bread. A wonderful fresh change for venerable VS? Nope. Dream on. But the site is still up and maybe, maybe pretty panties that say “ask first” will be sold soon.

This Is What A Victoria’s Secret Sabotage Looks Like

Dec. 4, 2012  |  http://www.businessinsider.com

Monday at noon, journalists and Victoria’s Secret social media fans were told that the lingerie line was promoting a new campaign: the “consent revolution” that  ”promotes consent to fight rape in new panties.”

A new website featuring women with various body types (as opposed to the highly photoshopped norm) called Pink Loves Consent explained how although previous thongs read “No Peeking” and “Sure Thing,” new ones would say “No Means No” and “Ask First.”

Soviet Army finally drops cloth foot wraps for socks

5 Feb

This is an amazing example of how old habits die hard. Boy do these look like a pain to put on. Makes you wonder what’s next. Toothpaste instead of wood ash?

Russian soldiers to trade foot wraps for socks

Jan. 15, 2013, 8:30 a.m.  |  http://www.kyivpost.com

MOSCOW — A Russian official says it’s time for the nation’s soldiers to switch from foot wraps to socks.

Since the late 17th century, Russian soldiers have been using wraps, rectangular strips of cloth that are carefully wrapped around their bare feet to prevent blisters from tall heavy boots with no laces.

But Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who took the post two months ago, said he was surprised to learn that some soldiers are still using the wraps, called “portyanki” in Russian, and told them to use socks instead.

At a televised meeting with military officers Monday, he said, “In 2013, or at least by the end of 2013, we must forget the word portyanki.”

Czar Peter the Great adopted the custom from the Dutch army in the late 17th century.

Design snafu creates WHORE magazine

26 Sep

Actually it is WHERE magazine but unfortunate layout choices have changed the name of the magazine. Could this be one of those things designers do to display displeasure with unkind clients?

Blunder: Designers of Where have obscured part of the first ‘E’ in the title lettering with the head of its cover model. The result is that one might assume the name of the magazine is ‘Whore’, instead

Blundering Where Magazine designers accidentally brand cover model ‘Whore’ by covering part of the first ‘E’ with her head

 By Tamara Abraham | www.dailymail.co.uk | 3 September 2012

A magazine has sparked ridicule due to the unfortunate layout of some of its cover images.

Designers of Where, a tourist guide published in cities across the U.S. and around the world, have obscured part of the first ‘E’ in the title lettering with the head of its cover model.

The result is that one might assume the name of the magazine is ‘Whore’, rather than ‘Where’.

The reader could also be mislead into thinking that the cover model is not a wholesome, tourist-friendly figure, but something else entirely.

The error appears on the cover of two editions of the magazine; the new fall 2012 Orange County issue, and the January 2012 Milan issue.

Mechanics who don’t wear pants

19 Aug

When I first saw this headline I wrongly assumed these mechanics worked naked like this guy. I was wrong. They are just wearing kilts.

Proud: Mr O’Brien says as long as he keeps his knees down and feet crossed when sliding under cars, everyone stays ‘happy and safe’

Don’t bend too far! Mr O’Brien has been wearing the kilts during the summer months from May to October for four years and often runs errands around town wearing it.

It’s So Hot, I saw a Mechanic Wearing a Kilt

Wednesday, August 15, 2012  |  www.ktsm.com

TULSA – No it’s not a bad joke, The blistering summer temperatures have many thinking of ways to beat the heat.

In the past, when you’ve taken your car to the shop for a tune or repair, you were greeted by a common stereotype. Greasy hands, thick boots and a long sleeved/pant work garment known as a one piece. The heat these mechanics work in have forced many to rethink the typical uniform because garages and auto bays often don’t have air conditioning and the engines usually put off their own heat.

Mechanics working under the hood in Tulsa, OK have found a cooler solution. They are wearing Scottish Kilts. Yes, those manly plaid skirts that are often the punch line to a joke. The hot conditions these guys work in is no joke though, and many have sworn off pants until the winter months. You don’t have to be from the Isles to wear one of these things, you just need to be ready for some relief and be mindful, (insert joke here), of hot leather seats.

It is official all modern pop music sounds the same

28 Jul

I do not dispute these findings but I do wonder who would pay for such a study and why? I think  one of the biggest reasons modern pop music sounds the same is that is IS the same. Not long ago Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga all had hits in the charts that were produced by the same producer and really did sound the similar to one another.

Pop music too loud and all sounds the same: official

Chris Wickham  |  www.reuters.com | Thu, Jul 26 2012

LONDON (Reuters) – Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same.

Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.

A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used.

“We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse,” Serra told Reuters. “In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations – roughly speaking chords plus melodies – has consistently diminished in the last 50 years.”

Teen Vogue snubs teen protesters

26 Jul

This is further proof of how dark and malicious the fashion industry is. It is also a really big P.R. gaffe.

Girls Demonstrate Outside Teen Vogue, Demand That Mags ‘Don’t Compromise Their Self Esteem’ By Featuring Retouched Models

By Tyler McCall & Morgan Von Steen | Jul 11, 2012 | www.fashionista.com

It’s hard to believe that a 14-year-old could actually inspire change in the fashion industry, but that’s just what teenager Julia Bluhm did when she teamed up with girl-activist group SPARK Movement last April, petitioning Seventeen magazine to feature unaltered, un-retouched real girls. Seventeen EIC Anne Shoket finally responded earlier this month with a “Body Peace Treaty“–pledging to be more transparent about their photography practices and to “always feature real girls and models who are healthy” and “never change girls’ body or face shapes.”

Higg boson particle presentation written in Comic Sans

24 Jul

Not often does a font get media attention. Comic sans however has moved people to snark, derision, and a web site calling for the ban of the font, bancomicsans.com. Recently the discovery of the Higg boson particle was announced and oddly, comic sans was involved.

God particle presentation written in Comic Sans

Vancouver Sun | July 5, 2012

The world is just starting to wrap its head around the so-called “God particle,” a new subatomic particle that could be the Higgs boson, the basic building block of the universe. But what some people are talking about is not the discovery itself, but how it was presented.

Scientists at the CERN research centre unveiled their findings with a presentation that used Comic Sans, a font that is often the object of derision among designers.

The Twitterverse had a field day with the Higgs boson Comic Sans presentation. One user joked that “The Higgs Boson announcement being made in Comic Sans is proof that God particle has a sense of humor.”

Prom season brings a crop of unacceptable dresses

29 Mar

Some say schools micromanage kids these days. Others argue there are so few boundaries that kids respect that they need to be micromanaged. This is not a problem new to 2011. Thanks to the marvy Rachel B. for tipping me off to this story.

This delightful monstrosity is apparently "one of PromGirl.com's best-selling dresses this year," according to the Wall Street Journal. It costs $378, and it's also on some high schools' "Unacceptable Prom Dresses" lists. Image www.thehairpin.com

For Prom, Schools Say ‘No’ to the Dress
Dress Codes Deem Some Styles Too Sexy; Wielding a 3-Inch Ruler
By ELIZABETH HOLMES | wsj.com | March 29, 2012

This spring, Hal David, principal at Cedartown High School in northwest Georgia, has spent a lot of time thinking about evening gowns.

“Unacceptable,” he has labeled some dresses shown on posters plastered in the hallways to publicize the school’s first dress code for prom. The signs also show styles deemed “acceptable” for the event, set for April 21 at the local country club. “It’s a picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words kind of deal,” says Mr. David. “We don’t want somebody to spend a lot of money on a dress and then show up and there be an issue.”

Schools from Connecticut to Arizona are responding to risqué prom dresses with elaborate dress codes. Prom fashion in some stores goes way beyond plunging necklines and hiked-up hems to include low-slung backs, thigh-high slits and midriff-bearing cutouts.

To avoid having to turn away tearful girls on the big night, prom organizers are taking pre-emptive action, issuing specific guidelines early, offering dress approval in advance and relying on image-heavy PowerPoint presentations to make it crystal clear what styles will, and won’t, be allowed at the dance.

Navajo sue Urban Outfitters over panties and flasks

26 Mar

Brand awareness and names are big business and not just for perfume or shoes anymore.

Urban Outfitters Sued Over ‘Navajo’ Panties
By Stephanie Rabiner, Esq. at FindLaw.com | http://www.reuters.com | Thu Mar 1, 2012

Just months after it demanded the retailer stop selling merchandise branded with its tribal name, the Navajo Nation has sued Urban Outfitters. The chain is being accused of trademark infringement and violations of the Indian Arts and Crafts Act, which makes it illegal to falsely suggest a product is made by an American Indian.

The tribe’s goal, though partly about money, is to protect its reputation, according to the suit. It finds the retailer’s ‘Navajo’ panties, jewelry and flasks to be “derogatory and scandalous.”

‘Top Model’ wins large hip lawsuit

22 Mar

Oh fashion you are a fickle mistress, but was this girl ever really model material, she focused on school instead of a career 4 years ago when first discovered. FYI 94 cm = 37 inches approx.

Click images too enlarge, but ya may wanna stay back, this girl is thick.

Canadian-born model wins ‘big hip’ lawsuit
Marlo Cameron, QMI Agency | www.torontosun.com | March 08, 2012

Some girls worry over their weight, but when Ananda Marchildon was told that her hips were too big, she took action.

Marchildon, 25, has won a lawsuit against her former modelling agency, world-renowned Elite Model Management, after she was fired for her “big” hips.

She was awarded the remaining $85,000 of her contract, which had been cut short after she earned only $13,000.

Marchildon, who was born in Hull before moving to Holland, was the winner of Holland’s Next Top Model in 2008 — a win that earned her a contract with Elite.

“When I won the contract my hips were 94 cm and the contract stated that I had to maintain that size,” she said. “I wasn’t allowed to get bigger, although it was OK if I got smaller.”

Marchildon is relieved the ordeal is over.

“It feels good, and apparently I’m sort of a role model,” she said. “I’m one of the few that dared to open their mouths and say something about the sizes in the fashion world.”

The shrinking standards for models’ sizes has been a hot topic in the fashion world for years. It’s slowly being addressed, but skinny girls are still glamourized and the fashion industry has yet to overhaul its standards.

“It’s worrying because very young girls are starting as models, and when you’re young you’re more skinny, but when you grow up your body changes,” she explained.
