lizc2fashion.jpg

Born March 31, 1929 in Brussels, raised in New Orleans, fashion icon Liz Claiborne passed away Thu Jun 28 2007. Not only did she OWN the giant round glasses look, she was a gifted designer and phenomenal business person. If you’re like ‘oh sad, but I’d never wear Claiborne’ read on.

The company – the first founded by a woman to be included in the Fortune 500 – went public in 1981. Claiborne retired from active management in 1989.

Liz Claiborne’s current portfolio includes more than 40 brands – from rapidly growing, hipster lines such as Juicy Couture to luxury names like Narciso Rodriguez and denim from Lucky Brand Jeans as well as moderate sportswear lines like Dana Buchman and Ellen Tracy – all in addition to the company’s namesake label.

Hats off to a heck of a dame! Sorry you were so sick.

Looking for ‘Bigfoot’ in Michigan

29 Jun

bigfoot_on_motorcycle.jpg
Well they have a better chance of finding bigfoot in the woods of Michign than at the Mall of America.

MANISTIQUE, Michigan
Researchers will visit Michigan’s Upper Peninsula next month to search for evidence of the legendary creature known as “Bigfoot” or “Sasquatch.”

The expedition will focus on eastern Marquette County, said Matthew Moneymaker of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization.

“We’ll be looking for evidence supporting a presence. … We hope to meet local people who might have seen a Sasquatch or heard of someone else who had an encounter,” Moneymaker told the Daily Press of Escanaba.

The legend of Bigfoot dates back centuries. But skeptics have challenged accounts of sightings, and practical jokers have staged hoaxes that have included grainy film footage of people dressed in costumes.

But Moneymaker said members of his organization have either glimpsed Bigfoot or gotten close enough to hear the creature in all but three of 30 expeditions in the United States and Canada.

The late Grover Krantz, a Washington State University professor who specialized in cryptozoology, the study of creatures that have not been proven to exist, believed Bigfoot was a “gigantopithecus,” a branch of primitive man believed to have existed 3 million years ago.

Enterprise Ride Catches Fire in Estonia
(Friday, May 18, 2007) – In Rakvere, Estonia, an Enterprise amusement ride somehow caught fire, leaving 37 people with burn and smoke inhalation injuries. The victims, six of whom suffered serious injuries, were rushed to local hospitals where they were treated and released within 24 hours. The carnival is operated by Tivoli Tuur. The carnival manager suggested that arson could be to blame, but no evidence of arson has been found in preliminary investigations.

The ride consists of twenty 2-passenger gondolas which are suspended from the outside of a wheel that is raised to a vertical position while spinning at high speed. The fire broke out while the ride was operating at full speed.

A criminal investigation is also underway.

The ride passed its last inspection in Sweden last month.

I hope this video link works for a long time, and oh yeah, it has a parental advisory too.

Killer Carnies Exposed

23 Jun

One of the best web sites EVER is http://www.rideaccidents.com. The short, concise, lurid and often gruesome copy combines death and dismemberment with silly names like Giggle a Minute Boats and Happy Fun Time Inc. Miss Fidget lost a childhood friend to a roller coaster ride, no shit. Carnies can kill you, and that includes hucksters like Disney and Six Flags.

Here’s a sample article from their site:
Yo-Yo ride injures 6 at Pennsylvania carnival
(Saturday, April 1, 2000) – At a carnival in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, six people were injured after parts of a Yo-Yo ride broke, leaving a metal chain to lash through the air, striking the victims in their heads and backs.

The Yo-Yo is a flying swing ride which consists of 32 individual seats that are suspended by chains from overhead booms which lift, tilt, and rotate during operation, allowing riders to circle through the air.

Eyewitnesses heard a loud noise, then noticed that a chain had broken off one of the ride’s seats. Victims say that they screamed and shouted, trying to get the ride operator to stop the ride, however the ride continued for another 10 revolutions, during which time the riders were repeatedly struck by the flying chain. The chain also hit at least one person who was standing nearby the ride. When the ride had finally come to a stop, the chain had wrapped around the neck of one passenger, who was choking and foaming at the mouth.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture were investigating the accident on Sunday. The ride has been shut down. The carnival runs until April 9.

Carnival security workers would not identify the owner of the ride.

Still think amusement parks are amusing?

Check out these photos. First photo, ok, so people are stuck upside down, call the fire department, it’ll work out. The second photo shows the true extent of the mishap-dang, thats a problem. News sources have conflicting info on how riders were saved. Big national media says firemen rescued riders using a ladder truck, a hell of a ladder truck with a 150 foot of ladder?? Yeah right. Local news says power was restored 30 minutes after a mini brown out. Mark Hunt, no relation to Mike Hunt, manager of Entergy Arkansas said this: “…marks indicated a bird or large animal touched the insulators simultaneously, causing a fault on the line and blowing the fuse connecting the park to the electrical services. ” Power came back on. Ride powered up and coaster cars returned to the platform.

Haute Couture is SUPPOSED to be conceptual

16 Jun

If you don’t “get” this outfit or understand haute couture you’re a short fingered vulgarian with bleach blonde hair. You probably dress entirely in black, are postmenopausal and view fashion and sex as spectator sports to be chatted about over forbidden chocolate treats. OOpss, sorry this crowd distracted from the fine and bold work of the talented Victoria Andreyanova.

Loch Ness rock festival declared a success despite man’s death

MALCOLM LAW

A man found unconscious in his car at a Loch Ness rock festival has died.

The 39-year-old from Tayside, who has not been named, was discovered by a member of the public in the early hours of yesterday.

Police and ambulance staff tried to resuscitate him, but he died shortly after arriving at Raigmore Hospital.

There were no suspicious circumstances, said a spokesman for Northern Constabulary. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal, he added.

Meanwhile, seven people were arrested on Saturday for various offences, including drugs charges and breach of the peace. However, the second Rock Ness Festival has been hailed as a success otherwise.

The event, on the shores of Loch Ness, started at 12pm on Saturday and wrapped up around 11pm last night.

More than 60 acts, including the Manic Street Preachers, Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers, performed on five stages for an estimated 35,000 fans during the two-day festival.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary added: “It has been fairly peaceful.”

Ellen MacRae, owner of the Dor2es Inn on the shore of Loch Ness, said yesterday: “It’s gone well. There’s been no serious problems and everyone’s enjoying themselves. I was dancing all last night. When it’s on your doorstep, you have to enjoy it.”

• A £1 million bounty from the bookmaker William Hill has netted 30 sightings of the Loch Ness monster in just 24 hours from festival-goers. Fans were offered “Nessie Snapper” cameras to keep an eye on the water for the elusive creature.

Missing Girl Found Naked, Berries In Hands

POSTED: 2:36 pm EDT June 15, 2007

KANKAKEE, Ill. — A 5-year-old girl who disappeared two days ago while boating walked up to searchers on Friday — naked, scratched and with berries in her hands — hours after her grandfather’s body was pulled from the Kankakee River.

Searchers Friday morning found the body of the 62-year-old grandfather in the water near a small island on the Kankakee River.

Hours after they pulled the body of David Klamecki from the water, Hannah Klamecki walked out of the woods and approached searchers.

Paramedics were checking on Hannah Klamecki’s condition, said Kankakee County Undersheriff Brad O’Keefe.

“She come walking up to us out of the woods,” O’Keefe said.

The grandfather’s body “was found floating in the river near where the boat was, which leads us to believe it was caught in a log jam and just got released by the current,” O’Keefe said.

The two were last seen on the river near Momence at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The sheriff’s office was notified at about 11 p.m. that they were missing.

Searchers believed Hannah Klamecki, whose footprints were still visible on the island beach, had drowned, and they were searching the river. She told searchers her grandfather had gone swimming, O’Keefe said.

“People were like, ‘Who’s that little girl? That can’t be her, can it?’” Chief Deputy Ken McCabe said. “I went up to her (and) asked, ‘How you doing? What’s your name?’”

Searchers gave Hannah Klamecki food and water and took her to a hospital as a precaution, McCabe said.

Authorities believe the river current swept Hannah Klamecki away from a small island where the two had stopped to swim, to the shore of the mainland where she eventually was found.

She told searchers that she was wearing flotation devices on her arms, and pulled herself from the water with a branch. The island is near a bend in the river that locals call “Whirlpool Bend.”

Sonar equipment was used in the search that had been suspended at nightfall Thursday. Authorities have said that the river near the island drops suddenly from a few inches to 13 feet deep.

Lake County, Ind., sent a team of divers and a helicopter to help with the search. The Momence Fire Department, the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Conservation and the Kankakee County sheriff’s river patrol unit also helped in the search.
