Larry Platt is the first pop sensation of 2010. The 63 (or 62) year old’s American Idol audition got aired and his performance of his original song “Pants on the Ground,” was a huge sensation.

Now he’s got a record deal, and Brett Favre and his team The Vikings did a “Pants on the Ground” chant after the Minnesota Vikings’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys and even famous people are spoofing the catchy tune.

“Pants on the Ground” is a scathing criticism of youth fashion. On ABC’s The View he explained the inspiration, “I was walking one day…I see a guy with a baby bottle in his mouth, pacifier, with his pants on the ground. That’s what gave me an inspiration.”

Even before his Idol audition, Mr. Platt has had a full and interesting life. At 16 Larry Platt became active in the Civil Rights movement. He worked with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Georgia, organizing sit-ins in the South. During the Bloody Sunday march from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery he was beaten. The Rev. Hosea Williams gave him his nickname, “General,” because of his heroic efforts on behalf of the civil-rights movement.

Because of “his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia.” The Georgia General Assembly proclaimed Sept. 4, 2001, Larry Platt Day in Atlanta.

PANTS ON THE GROUND LYRICS
Pants on the ground
Pants on the ground
Lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground
With the gold in your mouth
Hat turned sideways

Pants hit the ground
Call yourself a cool cat
Lookin’ like a fool
Walkin’ downtown with your pants on the ground

Get it up, hey!
Get your pants off the ground
Lookin’ like a fool
Walkin’ talkin’ with your pants on the ground.

Get it up, hey!
Get your pants off the ground
Lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground

Finding the “founding father” of the Lizard Man
Jun 20, 2009  |  www.theitem.com

Since I started working full time at The Item in November 2001, I can personally say that I’ve fielded calls several times from national and even international media looking for images on one of two things, Lee County’s Lizard Man and Pee Wee Gaskins.

Thursday morning on the way to work I was called and told that we had a shooting overnight on DuBose Siding Road. I was tasked with getting a picture of the house where the shooting took place. During my search and communication back with the office I was told that we thought the individual that was shot and killed was Chris Davis. The Item’s Lee County ace reporter Randy Burns had brought up the point that he thought this very well could be the Christopher Davis that had a run in with the Lizard Man. I’m not sure when the connections were made and the fact checking was complete, but in the end, one thing was for sure — this was indeed our man.

As I was preparing to leave this evening I was informed that we were in search of head shot of Mr. Davis.

My initial reaction was, AHA! I had heard our newsroom clerk Sandra Holbert talking about a folder that she inherited when she started working here that contained articles about the Lizard Man. So I went in search of it. I found it along with photograph depicting a young, 17-year-old Davis standing near the site off Browntown Road where he says he was attacked – the article was titled “Bumps in the night?” from July 20, 1988.

To make a long story short, as I scanned in Davis’ photo I began looking and scanning over the various articles that had been amassed in this folder, written during the past 20-plus years. I then kept finding things I thought you, our readers, might be interested in seeing. I was consumed!

I’ve now spent the last two hours – when I was supposed to be finalizing another project for today’s online edition – reading, scanning, making PDFs and retyping excerpts from some of the articles that were written.

Women Collides with, damages Picasso

26 Jan

actor-1904

Even though Picasso was prolific his works are still precious.  I’m glad it wasn’t a Vermeer. I’m reminded of a story, that I don’t have posted here about a man who stumbled at a British museum and destroyed  a giant precious vase.

Woman Collides With a Picasso
By CAROL VOGEL; Compiled by RACHEL LEE HARRIS  |  January 24, 2010 | New York Times

On Friday afternoon a woman taking an adult education class at the Metropolitan Museum of Art accidentally lost her balance and fell into “The Actor,” right, a rare Rose Period Picasso, tearing the canvas about six inches along its lower right-hand corner. Immediately after the accident the painting was taken to the Met’s conservation studio so experts could assess the damage, museum officials said. A statement released by the Met on Sunday afternoon said, “The damage did not occur in the focal point of the composition and the curatorial and conservation staffs fully expect that the repair — which will take place in the coming weeks — will be unobtrusive.” The canvas — about 6 ½ feet by 4 feet — was hanging on the wall of a second-floor gallery with other early Picassos. The museum declined to identify the woman, but said she was not injured. Picasso created the painting, which depicts an itinerant acrobat theatrically posed, during the winter of 1904-5. Museum officials said they expected the repair to be completed in time for “Picasso in the Metropolitan Museum of Art,” an exhibition of some 250 works from its collection opening on April 27.

Chris Davis “Lizardman” victim and witness murdered

25 Jan

This story is very sad for me, so much so I’ve had a hard time bringing myself to post it. I’ve always been fond of  Chris Davis. It took a lot of guts as a teenager to come forward and share the story of the large THING that nearly attacked him in a South Carolina swamp. (Assuming something otherworldly DID happen in that swamp.

I’ve not been able to find web footage of his early testimonials about the encounter. In them Mr. Davis was credible and believable. His story was a truly scary one. After working late at McDonald’s one night Chris got a flat tire on the way home. The 2 lane road where his car was stopped was was dark and lonely, in the middle of a swamp. As he started changing his tire, a “lizard-like creature with searing red eyes and along, (sic) ape-like arms pounding toward him on its hind legs”emerged from the Swamp. It seemed intent on getting at the food on Davis’s front passenger seat. Then everything happened really quickly…

It’s sad to lose him so young. He was truly a man of his age, wrestling with infamy he didn’t want and ultimately didn’t exploit . He was key figure in one of the centuries most amazing stories. He died a victim of drug related violence, a modern scourge, and epidemic among young black men.  Condolences to his family and friends.

This is the first of several Lizardman posts I’ll be making.

Police: Murder victim Lizard Man witness
www.theitem.com | Jun 20, 2009

Police have made no arrests in the case of a 37-year-old Sumter man shot to death Wednesday.

Christopher Davis was killed shortly before 11 p.m. in an incident at his home at 5230 DuBose Siding Road. Investigators say Davis was targeted in a drug-related incident.

“We’ve had several leads, but nothing has panned out so far,” said Capt. James Turner of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Davis, a Lee County native, recently moved to Sumter County, Lee County officials said. Davis became an international celebrity at the age of 16 when he reported the first sighting of the legendary Lizard Man of Lee County.

Former Lee County Sheriff Liston Truesdale said there would be no Lizard Man without Davis.

“In July 1988, Chris was the first witness interviewed as seeing the Lizard Man,” Truesdale said. “And what impressed me was that he told the same story every time. And he had to tell the story over and over again to the media and others. If you’re lying, you can’t tell the same story twice.”

Everybody wanted to hear the Lizard Man story from the eyewitness, Truesdale said.

Davis served as a grand marshal at a festival parade and signed T-shirts at a mall in Myrtle Beach, he said.

“At that time, he was super, nice kid,” he said. “You know, I bet he told the story more than 100 times every week for several weeks.”

Truesdale said he believes the media attention and publicity became too much for him.

“He could have made a mint from this,” Truesdale said. “A lot of people don’t know that he was scheduled to go to the Oprah (Winfrey) Show, but he canceled it. I think finally he just had enough.”

World’s shortest man meets world’s tallest man
news.com.au | January 15, 2010 03:09pm

WHAT happens when the world’s shortest man meets the world’s tallest man?

Well, it makes for a great photo opportunity as Guinness World Records Live opens in Istanbul, the hometown of the tallest man in the world, The Sun reports.

At a staggering 2.46m, Sultan Kosen, 27, towers over everyone. But his fellow record-holder, 21-year-old He Pingping is used to that. At a tiny 74cm, he is the world’s shortest man.

“I’ve wanted to meet Pingping ever since I was awarded the title ‘tallest man’ and I’m really happy that he was willing to travel to Turkey so we could both take part in the launch celebration of Guinness World Records Live,” Kosen said.

“I can’t wait to show him around our beautiful city.”

The Guinness World Records live show allows the general public to try and make it into the record books. The live event in Turkey is being held at Forum Istanbul, the largest shopping centre in Europe. After six weeks in Istanbul, the roadshow will visit another seven cities in Turkey.

Guinness World Records Live senior producer, Paul O’Neill, described the roadshow as a “rock tour of record challenges, without the bad language”.

Jewish “prayer box” causes emergency landing

21 Jan

In defense of the authorities, a Teffilin, is an uncommon item and the way it’s worn does appear bizarre. A mysterious black box is strapped to the head and straps wound round the arm. Add some words said in a guttural middle eastern language by a young possibly dark haired man and MAYHEM!

Imagine the confusion and panic when the kid told the crew he was being observant and was just saying his morning prayers.  Perhaps the kid was even upset and offended and got belligerent. Can you blame the flight crew for being scared, careful, cautious erring on the side of safety?

Whatever happened, it brought down a plane and educated the news watching populace about Jewish religious objects.

Prayer Box Confused for Dangerous Device on Plane
Teen praying on plane accidentally seen as a danger

By KAREN ARAIZA  |  Jan 21, 2010  |  www.nbcphiladelphia.com

A Jewish teenager who was praying on a plane and wearing a religious object made one of the flight crew members so nervous the plane was diverted to land immediately at Philadelphia International Airport Thursday morning.

The airport went into Emergency Response mode for what turned out to be a big cultural misunderstanding.

The 17-year-old was wearing a Teffilin — a Jewish religious object that has two boxes attached to leather straps.

One of the flight crew was alarmed. Police said she had no idea what it was and even though the teen tried to explain he was just saying his morning prayers, the pilots decided to take no chances.

The plane was flying from LaGuardia to Kentucky and the crew radioed in to the tower at Philadelphia International explaining the circumstances and asking to land.

All of the passengers — except for the teen — were evacuated.

The bomb squad, anti-terrorism squad, FBI and TSA all swarmed in.

They searched the plane and found nothing out of the ordinary. And when they interviewed the teenager, they figured out quickly that there was no threat at all.

The teen was with his younger sister, who was so distraught she was crying. Their parents were coming down to Philly to drive them home.

The rest of the passengers went on to Kentucky.

Denver school apologizes for MLK soul food lunches

21 Jan

Personally, I think this is no more offensive than serving “pizza pies” on Columbus Day. Considering this was Denver, Colorado this soul food lunch could have helped educate kids about American and Southern culture by showing them fried chicken and biscuits in context, that is, with collard greens.

I would like to point out to Mother Holladay, “who originally complained about the menu, e-mailed … a statement that said: “I’m confident we’ll see stereotype-free menus in the future” that soul food is not a stereotype. Soul food is a recognized regional American cuisine with restaurants, cookbooks and tv shows enjoyed by black and white people.

To say Soul food is a stereotype is like saying Chinese food is a stereotype. The more I think about this, the wackier it is. Some of kids’ favorite foods are Soul Foods like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and apple cobbler.

Yes, more black folks than white folks eat Soul Food, especially North of the Mason Dixon Line. The best Soul Food restaurants are often owned and run by black people, the same way the best Chinese Restaurants are often run by (gasp) Chinese people.

BUT if Mother Holladay feels like a racist when she sees collard greens she should deal with her problem alone and not deny Denver’s children the pleasure of the gray green greasy greens with no Tabasco.  She’d have made a better argument by pointing out that Soul Food’s are often high in fat and sodium and unhealthy. But she didn’t. She called the lunch without watermelon, flaming crosses or grape soda racist.

__________

Legal experts in the area of Schools have contacted me and told me the menu was probably changed to avoid the cost of even a potential legal fracas. The change of menu shouldn’t be viewed as an endorsement of the idea the meal was “racist” but a tactic to avoid even potential legal expense.

School Sorry For ‘Insensitive’ MLK Jr. Lunch

Denver Public Schools Lunch Would Have Included Chicken, Collard Greens

Denver Public School officials are apologizing after a parent complained that a school lunch meant to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was stereotypical and offensive, reported KMGH-TV.

The lunch, planned for Friday, was to include southern-style chicken, collard greens and a biscuit in honor of King.

Denver Public Schools spokesman Michael Vaughn released a statement that said: “The plan to serve a Southern-style meal in recognition of Martin Luther King Day was well intentioned but highly insensitive in light of certain hurtful cultural stereotypes still harbored in parts of our society.”

Organizers of Denver’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Marade, a combination march and parade that honors King every January, did not consider the menu inappropriate, considering that King came from a southern background, but said there are other, more meaningful ways of honoring him.

“When you reduce it to the ‘I have a dream’ speech and a fried chicken and collard green lunch, you have just destroyed everything that Dr. King stood for,” said Vern Howard, chairman of the Martin Luther King Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission.

But in barber shops and soul food restaurants in Denver’s historic Five Points district, the tone was decidedly more relaxed.

“To me, I don’t see that much wrong with this,” said Franklin Stigal, owner of the Afro-Styling Barber Shop. “A lot of people are just griping to be griping.”

Chereka Dickerson, who helps run the soul food restaurant Welton Street Café, said the criticisms were over-the-top.

“If that’s the food that’s really associated with black people in America, why not celebrate it instead of trying to make everything negative?” she said.

Denver Public Schools changed the Friday meal to the manager’s choice for Friday. Jennifer Holladay, the parent who originally complained about the menu, e-mailed KMGH a statement that said: “I’m confident we’ll see stereotype-free menus in the future.”

DJ played ‘Jump’ as woman threatened suicide leap
19/01/2010  |  www.rochdaleonline.co.uk

TV and radio personality Steve Penk has defended his decision to play a song called “Jump” while police were attempting to talk a suicidal woman down from a motorway bridge.

Mr Penk said he played the Van Halen classic “Jump” following a request from a frustrated driver stuck in traffic on the M60.

A 30-year-old woman had been threatening to jump from the Nut Bank bridge near junction 19, Middleton.

The incident closed all three lanes of the M60 anti-clockwise and two lanes of the clockwise carriageway between junction 19 and 21 Chadderton, with hundreds of drivers affected.

Despite police spending nearly nine hours trying to talk her down, the woman jumped shattering her heels.

Mental health charity Mind said Penk’s decision to play the song was “in very poor taste” while the Samaritans said it showed a “lack of compassion”.

Listener Lorna Guinn slammed the move as “irresponsible” because the woman could have overheard the song on a car radio. However Mr Penk, who bought 96.2 The Revolution, which is based at the Sarah Moor Studios, Henshaw Street, in September, 2008, said he did not regret playing the song.

He said: “The entire area had been thrown into total chaos by the inexplicable actions of a single, troubled woman.

“A listener texted me to request the classic rock track ‘Jump’ by Van Halen and, after careful consideration, I decided to play it because I knew it would send out a clear signal of empathy to all those gridlocked drivers who were going to be late for work, school, a hospital appointment, etc through no fault of their own.

“I was, of course, very sorry to hear that the woman had subsequently jumped from the bridge but relieved that her injuries were minor.

“If, as has been suggested, the woman jumped because she heard the song from a passing car radio that’s unfortunate but I don’t regret playing it for a minute.”

Facebook login reveals HUGE internet security glitch

19 Jan

Since more and more people use cell phones to access web content this is a a HUGE issue. Way to go AT&T.

AP Exclusive: Network flaw causes scary Web error
By JORDAN ROBERTSON,  Ap Technology Writer  |  Jan 16, 2010  |  AP

SAN FRANCISCO – A Georgia mother and her two daughters logged onto Facebook from mobile phones last weekend and wound up in a startling place: strangers’ accounts with full access to troves of private information.

The glitch — the result of a routing problem at the family’s wireless carrier, AT&T — revealed a little known security flaw with far reaching implications for everyone on the Internet, not just Facebook users.

In each case, the Internet lost track of who was who, putting the women into the wrong accounts. It doesn’t appear the users could have done anything to stop it. The problem adds a dimension to researchers’ warnings that there are many ways online information — from mundane data to dark secrets — can go awry.

Several security experts said they had not heard of a case like this, in which the wrong person was shown a Web page whose user name and password had been entered by someone else. It’s not clear whether such episodes are rare or simply not reported. But experts said such flaws could occur on e-mail services, for instance, and that something similar could happen on a PC, not just a phone.

“The fact that it did happen is proof that it could potentially happen again and with something a lot more important than Facebook,” said Nathan Hamiel, founder of the Hexagon Security Group, a research organization.

Candace Sawyer, 26, says she immediately suspected something was wrong when she tried to visit her Facebook page Saturday morning.

Skin plays role in hearing

18 Jan

The article below, excerpted from Science News references the Mcgurks Sound Illusion which can be found at this link and is pretty darn cool. It’s almost as cool as there being a field of study called psychoacoustics.

Skin Plays a Remarkable Role in Human Hearing
November 25, 2009  |  By Bruce Bower, Science News  |  www.usnews.com

People listen with their skin, not just their ears. Air puffs delivered to volunteers’ hands or necks at critical times alter their ability, for better or worse, to hear certain speech sounds, a new study finds.

Tactile and auditory information, as well as other sensory inputs, interact in the brain to foster speech perception, propose linguists Bryan Gick and Donald Derrick, both of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

In many languages, speakers expel a small burst of air to make aspirated sounds. In English, for example, aspiration distinguishes ta from da and pa from ba.

Volunteers were more likely to identify aspirated syllables correctly when they heard those syllables while receiving slight, inaudible air puffs to the skin, Gick and Derrick report in the Nov. 26 Nature. Air puffs enhanced detection of aspirated ta and pa sounds and increased the likelihood of mishearing non-aspirated da and ba sounds as their aspirated counterparts, the researchers say.

Participants integrated skin sensations into what they heard despite having had few opportunities to feel the air flow that they or others produce while talking.

“This speaks to the power of the human perceptual system to make use of whatever information is available from any of the senses,” Gick says.

Psychoacoustics researcher Charlotte Reed of MIT agrees. “These new findings make it clear that we can intuitively use tactile information during speech perception,” Reed remarks.
